Solved: Android Lollipop (5.0+) with Straight Talk AT&T SIM – Google Hangouts Can’t Receive/Download MMS Images

I recently put a pair of AT&T branded LG G3s onto Straight Talk – and after I thought I had everything set-up properly – data, MMS, SMS, etc. I ran into a problem.  Some (not all) incoming MMS messages from friends arrived saying there was a download attached, but when I would click to download/re-try, it would just time out – over and over.  Argh.  I eventually found some settings that work.  They are DIFFERENT than what Straight Talk has on their BYOP (bring your own phone) website.

This first step will differ slightly depending on the maker or the ROM of your phone.  You’re looking for the Network/Mobile Network section in the settings.

Apps > Settings > Networks > Mobile Network > Access Point Names > New APN

Name:  Straight Talk

APN: tfdata

Proxy:  Not set

Port:  Not set

Username:  Not set

Password:  Not set

MMSC:  http://mms-tf.net

MMS Proxy:  mms3.tracfone.com

MMS Port:  80

MCC:  310

MNC:  410

Authentication Type:  PAP

APN Type:  default,supl,mms,hipri

ATTENTION:  The following section is no longer valid.  The newer versions of Hangouts no longer include this option.  I’m leaving these instructions up for other similar SMS app issues.

Open Google Hangouts > Click the three bars next to your name > Settings > SMS > Access Point Names

Select the “top” entry – we’re going to edit it for Straight Talk (you can’t add a new one that I could find).

Name:  Straight Talk

APN: tfdata

MMSC:  http://mms-tf.net

MMS Proxy:  mms3.tracfone.com

MMS Port:  80

MCC:  310

MNC:  410

Make sure the entry you edited is the one that’s selected, and then reboot your phone.

After doing so, all of the “stalled” MMS messages started coming in as soon as I was back on-network.  I verified this using WiFi or AT&T’s 4G LTE network.  Hope this helps someone…it was frustrating reading so many posts where people kept saying “use a different app,” while doing absolutely nothing to solve the problem.

I don’t know if Hangouts was updated or I missed it, but I couldn’t see anywhere to enter APN settings manually within Hangouts. I used this method with Go SMS Pro though, and it worked perfectly. Thanks so much for the advice. I have an ATT LG G3. I notice there is a default ATT APN that can’t be deleted. I’m thinking that messaging apps try to pull mms data from this and maybe that’s why it doesn’t work until you manually give the app the correct MMS data.

Yes, you’re correct – the option is no longer present in current releases of Hangouts. I have amended the article. I’m glad it helped you with another SMS application – that’s really good to know.
